…Scared?

As salaamu Alaykum

Every now and then something happens in our life that makes us take a step back and look at the situation. One such experience happened a couple nights ago:

I was sitting with a friend at a restaurant just relaxing and watching the Cavaliers play on ESPN. It was my first time there but my friend was there so often that the management knew him personally. I was still wearing my dress shirt and pants because I had just gotten off from work. As we were talking and he was eating dinner, a police officer walked up to our table and sat down. He looked at us and asked us how we were doing. He began to tell us that he received a call because people were scared and suspicious of these two arab looking guys with beards. SubhanAllah, this was the first time I experienced a feeling of segregation like that. Apparently, people in the restaurant got scared because of the way we looked.

Unfortunately, that’s the mindset alot of people have in modern times after the media’s portrayal of Muslims and Islam.

I am a Muslim. I am American-born and raised. I am not afraid to say that I love this country and I would never do anything to hurt it. It saddens me that people who have little or no knowledge (except for that which they see and hear in the media) of Islam are the first ones to point fingers and get scared. For what reason? As humans, we are always scared of things that we have no knowledge of. Why are people scared in the dark? Because they can’t see and what you can’t see or know- will always scare you.

Are all people of Hispanic descent ones who cut grass?
Are all people of African descent gangsters?
Are Muslims terrorists?
No. No. And no.

See the beauty about Islam is that it is perfect, without fault. Muslims as human beings are always going to be imperfect but that doesn’t make Islam bad.

Imagine.

An African American lady sitting in a bus refusing to move just because a person of different color told her to. If Rosa Parks would have surrendered to the bullying of that man, where would we be today?

Martin Luther King, Jr. One of the greatest pieces of the Civil Rights movement.

Malcolm X. Enough said.

I pray that we, the whole of mankind, can come together and stop discriminating against each other.

As it says in the Quran:

"And mankind is naught but a single nation."Holy Quran 2:213

Our Friends

Narrated AbuHurayrah:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A man follows the religion of his friend; so each one should consider whom he makes his friend.
{Book 41, Number 4815 : Sunan Abu Dawud}

As human, we are surrounded by people a majority of our lives and as such we are influenced by them as well. If we go to the gym with a friend, we motivate each other. If one slacks, the other slacks. Rally car drivers have a partner who reads the map while the driver…drives. Without a map, the driver will still be able to drive the car…he’ll just be driving in the wrong direction. Our friends play a vital role in the way we live our life.

Bad friends don’t care if you miss salat, if you flirt, if you don’t fast during Ramadan.
Good friends do care.

In today’s modern society, we’ve lost the real meaning of being a friend. Too much so people are running after wordly things forgetting what is really important.

In high school, one of my classmates told me to, “Be friends with people that are rich, so you make some money while you’re at it!”
-Well I say be friends with people that are rich in rememberance of Allah, so you can make some hasanat while you’re at it.

Allah says in the Qur’an
“And (remember) the Day when the wrong-doer will bite his hands and say: Woe to me! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger. Woe to me! If only I had not taken so- and-so as a friend! He has led me astray from this Reminder (the Qur’an) after it had come to me. And Satan is ever a deserter to man in the hour of need.” [25:27-29]

My friends to are very important to me. I personally experienced how hanging out with the wrong crew can affect you. I used to make fun of “Masjid Going people” because I thought that their lives were boring and plain. I was wrong. By the will of Allah, making new friends brought me closer to Allah and Islam. The feeling of praying salaat, making du’a, fasting, and hanging out with Muslim buddies compares to none.

There’s a saying a few of my friends say all the time…

“Stand up for the truth, even if you stand alone.”

I like that saying but when you think about it…it’s a little off in my opinion. Why? Because if you stand up for the truth, there will be people around you that helped you realize that truth AND people that support you in that truth…

“Stand up for the truth and you will never be alone”

Inna lillahi wa inna ‘ilayhi raji’oon

As salaamu alaykum

A 19 year old boy that many people knew in our community died from a head on collision after a drunk driver drove into opposite traffic.

Subhan’Allah.

Allah sends us constant reminders of what our fate will eventually be in terms of this Duniya.  Death.  It’s the one thing we all share in common.  We all will die one day or another.

And they say, “There is not but our worldly life; we die and live (i.e. some people die and others live, replacing them) and nothing destroys us except time.” And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming. And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, their argument is only that they say, “Bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful.” Say, “God causes you to live, then causes you to die; then He will assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt,” but most of the people do not know.  (Quran, 45:24-26)

Sit there, were you are and think about it. You’re reading this, hand on the mouse or keyboard, sitting in your chair. Your next heart beat, your next breath could be your last.  What would we feel if the Angel of Death was coming towards us with one mission…to take our soul into the next life.  Will our friends, money, or power save us from the iron grip of this angel? No.

The angel of death, who has been charged with you, will gather you; then to your Lord you will be returned.
(As-Sajdah 32:11)

People who wasted this life chasing after worldly thing AND not repenting for it, fear that day.  People who remembered Allah and seeked repentance during their life, will see it as a gift, insha’Allah.

It’s coming.  Are you prepared?

Humble

slowly but surely our tears fall,
in fear of the One
who created us all

Standing, hands bound
we fall,
face down connecting with the ground

It is here our Journey begins
running through
rivers and birds being held by Him
It is here we crumble
from beings of pride
into specs of slaves
of the One who
keeps the rhythm within
of the One who
keeps traffic from going out and going in
of the One who
gives us
of the One who
gives us
To endure a task to count
that task will never end.
It is here we crumble
as rivers and birds are being held by Him
It is here we are humble
as rivers and birds are being held by Him
It is here we are humble
The rivers of tears flow
the voices of birds say
Subhana Rabbiyal A’la
It is here we crumble
It is here
that which makes us humble

PO-TEN-TIAL

As salaamu alaykum,

Potential…

No, I’m not talking about a potential wife or husband or a potential job…I’m talking about the potential that we all possess within us.

Inside all of us, Muslim & non-Muslim alike, there is a fire that can be the cause of us using our entire potential as humans.  Its not easy, though.  When we do release that fire within us, it’s something that can move large groups of people.  Look at Malcolm X, Khalid Yasin, Muhammad Ash-Shareef…

As a non-Muslim, potential is there to do the right thing-which is worshipping the One who created us they way He wants us to worship Him.  I believe for a non-Muslim, the max potential is believing that there is only One God worthy of worship, no Father, no Son, no Statues, etc.

When we talk about the idea of one god, it makes sense to everyone because it simple and fits within the “jeans” of our common sense.  When we are born, we all are born sinless and pure.  Growing up, we are covered with ideas and beliefs that fluster and cloud that pure and sinless state.  Take a Tootsie Roll Lollipop for example, even though the center of the lollipop is covering the chocolate in the middle…the center is always going to be chocolate.  In that same way, we all have a sense, a natural inclination towards what is right, but we are covered by things that appear sweet and pleasing-but in actuality, it is harmful.   It is harmful because it takes away from what our Creator is deserving of, which is complete obedience and love for Him.  If your dad buys you a car, are you going to thank your cousin for it?  No, you are going to thank your Dad for it.  So is the One who created your heart, lungs, feet, eyes, brain, and much more not worthy of your worship the way He wants you to worship him?  That is the potential that all non-Muslims have within them.

As a Muslim, we also have a potential and it is along the same lines as non-Muslims.  Only, we take the idea of worshipping One God and we carry further on.  How do we worship Allah? What can we do to please Allah?  Do we remember Him enough? The One who made us as creatures that don’t have to think about exhaling and inhaling every time we breathe, is our every breath in remembrance of Allah?

When we use our potential, we awake a sleeping giant within us all.  Only then can we move forward as an Ummah.

Are you using your potential? Don’t procrastinate.

Mistakes

We all make mistakes.
Mistakes all have one thing in common…they can all be forgiven. No matter how large or how small, they can be forgiven:

Forgiveness by humans
This comes hard sometimes. It comes hard because we let emotions and feelings get involved. It is sometimes hard to understand that people do make mistakes, whether it be out of fear, spite, or arrogance. What’s even harder to accept is that the person making the mistake has harmed themselves more then harming us. We must all find it within ourselves to overcome feelings of hurt and hate, so that we may forgive each other and aim towards a higher peace, insha’Allah.

Forgiveness by Allah
As Muslims we live our life according to the will and rule of Allah. He has created us and so He is our Master, our Lord. We do as he commands. Now occasionally, we let our guard drop and let little shayateen munchkins hop into our ears and whisper words of evil. We forget about Allah at that moment, and we fall to the bitter sweet taste of our desires. Bitter-sweet because it feels good at that moment, but later on we feel guilt. Now heres the catch…We will never know if Allah has forgiven us for our sins, but what we do know is that Allah is the Most Merciful. He is so merciful that even the complexity of our minds cannot and never will be able to imagine its vastness. Allah’s mercy is sitting right there on table, we just have to roll up our sleeves and ask to dive in.

We must also think about this mistake we made. Seriously, ponder upon it and think about what put you in that situation…

Was it the basketball game that made you miss salaat?
Was it feeling of hunger that made you break your fast?
Was it the emotion of anger that made you yell at your mother?
Was it the “hotness” of that boy or girl that made you flirt?

After you think about the causes and effects, think about why it happened. What put you in that situation? What avoidable outside influences provoked you to fall into sin? Regret what you did and hate it to the max. Then write down the causes and influences that tripped you up and made you fall. Realize that those are things that you CAN and MUST avoid. Get back up from that fallen state. Make du’a that Allah forgives you and I and keeps us away from the temptations that look good in this dunya but lead only to Hellfire.

It’s okay to cry. Men cry, women cry, kids cry…BELIEVERS cry. Crying shows that your heart is still soft and aware of Allah. Be sincere and let it out. Umar ibn al Khattab (RA) used to have dark lines from his eyes down his cheeks from crying so much…one of the greatest warriors!

As I leave I would like to say Eid Mubarak to all my Brothers and Sisters out there and hope that everyone is in the best of iman in these happiest of moments!

As-salaamu Alaykum!

Taking over the World.

As salaamu Alaykum,

Taking over the world?

Yeah, they’re taking over the world.  Who?

Cell Phones.

Sooner or later, they’re gonna have arms and legs that will enable them to take care of our children and parents.  They way we’re headed- We’ll start having genetically mixed cell phones and humans.  They already contain most of our information, including phone numbers, addresses, bank account info, email addresses, pictures, videos, and messages.  They can be traced from any government organization to find your location or even hear what you’re saying.  While we pray, having our phones on loud or even vibrate is something we HAVE to do-y’know because if we turn our phones off, we might (omg!) miss a call or message.  One time I remember seeing someone with their hands raised saying, “Ameen,” while there was a cell phone in his hands!  That’s right baby, make du’a to that phone, not Allah.

Seriously, I work at a cell phone shop and I see these grown MEN crying over losing all their contacts?  Whatever happened to remembering numbers or writing them down?  The world is getting lazy and fatter because of that laziness.  When was the last time we could leave the house without worrying about our phones.

Don’t get me wrong, cell phones are important to get a hold of someone, but we’re at a point where if we lose a phone, our entire life is put at a halt.

When we talk about cell phones, we have to bring up ear phones a.k.a. Bluetooth headsets…I have a couple friends who wear them all the time, probably even to sleep lol! I think it’s hilarious how hijabis put their phones in their hijabs so they don’t have to hold them…makes me want to wear a hijab.

All in all, the point of this blog is to show that technology is taking the world to another stage.  Sure, somethings we need but most-we don’t.  Keep your responsibities dependant upon yourself, not your gadgets.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: “Allah’s Messenger (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) would mend his shoes, darn his clothes and do household work like any ordinary person. He was a man among men and he would milk his goat and do all his personal work himself.” (Tirmidhi)

Anyway, Rockets play tonight- Insha’Allah they’ll be able to play like they did the last game.

“Let the Creator tell us how to worship Him, not the creation.  Read Qur’an and see the change.”

It’s Dawah Time!

Ever watch an episode of Power Rangers, no not the crazy modern ones, but the ORIGINAL rangers. They grab their little morphing gadgets and morph into enhanced beings with cool weapons.

Well, lately I’ve been giving alot of Daw’ah. Everywhere I’ve been going, I’m handing out pamphlets, asking people if they’ve heard of Islam or the Qur’an, or even asking what the son of God means. It’s like I’m morphing into an enhanced Muslim with my morphing gadget (the Qur’an) and using my tools (pamphlets, Hadith, ayaahs from the Qur’an). I can already imagine the Muslim version of the Power Ranger-

Guys in multi-colored thobes running around with da’wah materials
Girls wearing abayas and hijabs

Dang that would be pretty pimp.

On a serious note, how cool would it be (I was thinking this earlier before), if more youth started giving more Da’wah…Think about it, alot of the underspoken kids would gain confidence and knowledge. Knowledge of what, you ask? Knowledge of other deens. Everyday, you’re met with different people from different origins-Egnostics, Catholics, Christians, Jews, Atheist, Hindus, and even people who even go to the extent of worshipping the 12 rules from the AA (Alcoholics Anonymous)…Undecided

Da’wah sets your mind free and gives you iman rush like no other- An Undescribable Feeling. Your going out there, inviting to the way of your Lord, having dialogues with fellow humans, destroying the false image of Islam as “violent,” and showing people that life does NOT have to complicated- Islam keeps it simple. Seriously, if you’ve read anything on the Trinity- it confuses the CRAP out of me. Three is one and one is three. Man, if only that worked with money- $1 is $3. I’d be banking.

325- They came out with these new cards that says, “Club 325.” AWESOME way to get the attention of non-muslims. On the back it talks about the Council of Nesia. This is where the Bible was re-made by humans and the idea of Trinity was introduced. Alot of people don’t know this but- The idea of the Trinity is a pagan idea that was carried on by the Romans, who basically assembled this meeting. Its good to know this kind of stuff- I recommend watching the videos on YouTube by Sh. Khalid Yasin, amazing speaker and lots of good da’wah material.

Da’wah challenges your mind to think on your feet- on the spot improvised Da’wah is what we can call it. Now I know I said Da’wah builds confidence and alot of people must be thinking, “No! confidence is bad! Be humble!” One thing people should remember is that confidence is different from pride. We must be careful, however, because that confidence does have an opportunity to lead to pride…May Allah protect us from having a spec of pride in our hearts- Ameen.

Islam is something to be proud of. We don’t have to sit there and explain and make Islam “look” good because Islam IS good. It’s not like you have to be a salesperson to give da’wah. It sells itself. I mean, c’mon, what better feeling is there to give yourself an iman boost while spreading the True Word of God. Prophet Muhammad’s (salallahu alayhi wasalaam) whole life as a Messenger was basically about spreading Islam.

Anyhow, my back has been killing me for the past few days, not sure whats going on, but insha’Allah, I’ll get thru this. Make du’a for me!

So back to the topic of Dawah…Where are all my fellow Muslims at?!!?! We need to expand our horizons and spread the word brothers and sisters!!!

It’s Dawah Time!!!

So
Every now and then, we begin to start something new in our lives…Walking, the first time we say, “As-salaamu Alaykum (Peace be with you),” or even the first time we made a friend outside the house.  Sometimes, we carry those activities with us throughout our lifetime, while others, we drop.

Hopefully, InshaAllah, this blog won’t be one of them.

In this dunya,
We put much consideration
into what will be our occupation
not knowing the purpose of our life
and our life’s duration
but life is really about preparation
and about freeing people from their own creation
an emancipation
using dawah
so that in the hereafter
we have a fixation
in the Garden of pleasures
and true satisfaction.

We have a brothers night program tonight.  I remember the first time I ever went to one-it was amazing.  I never saw brotherhood the way I did that night.  Different cultures meshing together- all coming for different reasons then the other.  It was life changing.  It made want to come to the Mosque more and more…and everyone knows what happens then…

Like our Beloved Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “A person is likely to follow the faith of his friend, so look at whom you befriend.”

As salaamuAlaykum

Remember Du’a-The weapon of the Believer.
